Mar, 2007 - The Defense Department expects to deploy more than 14,000 National Guard troops to Iraq next year, shortening their dwell time between deployments. Guard officials have alerted state commanders in Arkansas, Indiana, Ohio and Oklahoma that units from their states which had completed tours in Iraq and Afghanistan could be notified to return to Iraq between January and June of next year.

A final decision will depend upon whether the situation in Iraq improves, said officials. The administration has revised rules that had restricted call-ups of Guard members to 24 months every five years. Under the revision, units that have been mobilized for 24 months in the last five years now can be activated again, although DoD asserts it will try to limit the total new mobilization time to one year.
