The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. David M. Heath, 30, of LaPorte, Ind., died August 16 in Sadr City, Iraq, when his patrol came under small arms and rocket-propelled grenade attack. Heath was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

The incident is under investigation.
