Mr. Leverett served on the USS Essex, which was involved in numerous campaigns in the Pacific theater. In November of 1944, the Essex saw her first injury when a Kamikaze hit the port flight deck with planes ready for take off, killing 15 and wounding 44. Mr. Leverett was present during the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima.

He was honorably discharged from the service on November 7, 1947. He the went to work at Tinker Air Force Base where he retired from after 52 years of service.

Mr. Leverett passed away May 29, 2005.
